The historic and picturesque setting of Sea Island, Ga. demands an estate home as striking and authentic as the location itself. Golden Isles Custom Homes created just such a masterpiece last year when it crafted an extraordinary Cape Cod home and pool house with an ocean view directly on the beach.
As the builders worked to invest the home with authentic detail, they came up against a daunting hurdle. The honest-to-goodness details of historic-looking homes they sought to incorporate had to withstand the punishing elements Sea Island would unleash, including winds, humidity and salt water.
To craft the magnificent columns, trim, corbels and trellises, the builders relied on Kleer trimboard and sheets.
Columns less than 6 by 6 inches featured KLEERWrap Post Wrap, while 12-by- 12-inch columns with kerfs were custom created from Kleer sheets. Trellises, corbels and pool house outdoor shower all feature Kleer trimboard and Kleer sheets.
The 8,000-square-foot traditional Cape Cod main house featuring a great room, six bedrooms and 7-1⁄2 bathrooms offers ocean views from every dramatic east-facing window. The blue-grey-colored home stands on just under an acre, includes a private beach, and offers an adjacent 3,000-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath pool house.
"The exterior is [made up of] cedar shingles with Kleer PVC trim," explains Brad Brumbach, manager of St. Thomas Island, Ga.-based Golden Isles Custom Homes, which builds homes on Georgia‘s "Golden Isles," including St. Thomas, Jecko, Little St. Thomas and Brunswick Islands, as well as Sea Island.
"The columns, accent items and trim are all Kleer PVC. It’s a maintenance-free, rot-resistant product that weathers well. The rot resistance was important due to the fact the home faces the ocean in one of the worst climates imaginable for exterior products -- humid, wet and salty."
But it was more than climate resistance that convinced Brumbach and his colleagues to depend on Kleer products. "Kleer offers enough flexibility to custom make our mouldings to match the architect’s drawings," he says.
"Kleer’s broad product line offers the flexibility to custom make our moldings to match the architect’s drawings. In accents like trellises and corbels, we were able to access custom Kleer product. It paints beautifully and looks identical to wood."
Beyond its imperviousness to the oceanside elements and its genuinely authentic, historically-correct appearance, Kleer delivered the readily observable attribute of distinctive good looks. "It was painted white, and it’s just beautiful, it’s gorgeous," Brumbach exults. "Every time you look at the house from a different angle, you’re amazed at how beautiful it looks."
Additional benefits of Kleer: it cuts and installs exactly like wood, it can be cleaned with an occasional pressure wash, and it comes with fasteners warranted for salty environments. Adds Brumbach: "You don’t have to worry about the fasteners rusting."
The builders of this stunning home on Sea Island, Ga. used Kleer for the columns, trim, trellises and corbels, recognizing Kleer’s ability to blend weather resistance and ease of use with gorgeous historic authenticity.
